Brainstem hypoperfusion in CFS.
Sir, Costa and his colleagues {QJ Med 1995; 88:767-73) are to be congratulated for providing more information about chronic fatigue syndrome. Hypocapnia is a powerful and readily available cerebral vasoconstrictor. 1 The 'cerebral vasoconstric-tion, and reduction in cerebral blood flow, are initiated when the arterial pCO 2 has fallen 2 mmHg below normal. When the pCO 2 has fallen by 25 mmHg, c...
متن کاملA pediatric case of Bickerstaff's brainstem encephalitis
Bickerstaff's brainstem encephalitis is characterized by ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and disturbance of consciousness. It is similar to Miller Fisher syndrome, a variant of Guillain-Barre syndrome, in that they share features such as ophthalmoplegia and ataxia. The difference is that patients with Bickerstaff's brainstem encephalitis have impaired consciousness, whereas patients with Miller Fisher...
متن کاملA Case of Bickerstaff Brainstem Encephalitis and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia
Bickerstaff Brainstem Encephalitis (BBE) is a post-infectious immune disorder. It is rare, yet the most severe variant of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in terms of initial presentation. Moreover, the coexistence of BBE and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) is distinctly uncommon. We report a case of a patient with a background history of Precursor B cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (pre B A...
متن کاملA case report of overlapping Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis and Guillain-Barre syndrome.
We report a case of a 23-year-old man diagnosed with overlapping Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis (BBE) and Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS). The patient initially presented with fever and headache and gradually developed ataxia, disturbance of consciousness, respiratory muscle paralysis, bilateral facial paralysis and quadriplegia accompanied by significant atrophy of limb, temporalis and masse...
متن کاملBrainstem encephalitis and the Miller Fisher syndrome.
A case is described of a man with an acute onset areflexic ataxic syndrome with partial ophthalmoparesis and normal limb muscle power. There was evidence of both a peripheral neuropathy and a brainstem encephalitis. The patient made a full recovery and the interrelationship and nosology of brainstem encephalitis and the Miller Fisher syndrome are discussed.
